Fitspo vs Thinspo

I’m amazed with Instagram, mostly due to the fact that I’m an incredibly visual person. I love the photos and quotes that users post. I try to post motivational things, photos that tell a story, progress of my own fitness & health, and simple things throughout my day that I find useful or interesting.

face the wall or face yourself. be strong. be confident. be fit. it’s never too late to make a change!

However, I have noticed an incredible rise in “thinspo” and other related tags. {“Thinspo” meaning inspiration to be thin, not healthy. Aspirations to see your spine instead of deltoids. Determination to restrict meals instead of eating to live well.} It makes me sad that females (some males too!) are so focused on numbers and getting “skinny.” Their pictures & posts include surreal images of waif thin models, hip bones, calorically scarce meals, and qoutes about failure & self loathing. I wish I would’ve had social media throughout my adolescence to inspire me to become healthy and fit, as opposed to turning pages in magazines and seeing images of models that have since forced society to live on a scale.  This realization drives me to motivate & inspire others that fit, strong bodies are healthy are healthy bodies.

these pictures make a powerful statement…

I am followed by a few Instagram users with headings that include ED Recovery & ANA. I like that they see my images of muscle gains, motivational life quotes & robust yet healthy meals. I want them to realize that they are chasing a ghost. I can only hope that the moment they begin to understand true health, that they’ll begin to let go of the control they feel they need to have over the scale. I want them to see the signifance if “Fitspo” instead of “Thinspo.”

thigh gap or squat rack?

Stop living by numbers! Feel good in your skin. Feel healthy. Treat your body well.

you can be sitting or you can be strong. “Tough times don’t last. Tough people do.”

I often turn to pictures of strong, fit females for my “Fitsporation.” I am dedicated and work hard to gain lean muscle mass and eat healthfully. Yet I don’t beat myself up when results don’t appear overnight. I don’t self loathe if my weight fluctuates. I don’t restrict meals if I have an ‘off day.’ And I will never, ever again accept society or media pressure to be thin.

I am making it my personal mission to help social media users see that “strong IS sexy!”

*I was very picky while choosing the images for this post. I have been working on this for a while. The women I have chosen to feature all have one thing in common: HEALTH. The body was designed to be fed! The body was built to move! Muscles are meant to be developed and utilized! These women are strong and motivating! While they are models, I still find them admirable and follow these ladies through social media. These are the women that have guided me away from the ‘thin’ stereotypes.

*** THERE’S MORE TO LIFE THAN SCALES & NUMBERS ***

Don’t crumble under media pressure to be thin. If you feed it what it needs and activate muscles through exercise, your true health and inner confidence will shine through. You are better than just a number on a scale…

Motivation Monday

It took me a long time to truly let go of the hope that results, with anything, will come overnight. I now know that I need to not complain or self-loathe, continue to persevere with hard work and results will come.

A Fit Mom Lifestyle

“I just went through my closet and was wearing a size 16 last July. Now a size 8 fits…” Sound like someone who has made a big change?I received that message from my mom about a week ago and am excited to share her amazing transformation with all of you!

And thanks to my mom for giving me her honest starting statistics. Just goes to show how proud she is now of what she accomplished!

long before her transformation… my wedding in July 2011

August 2012 Statistics
4th — cholesterol test taken (fasted 12 hours before test)
8th — results revealed cholesterol of 264
9th — went for my first early morning walk (less than 2 miles) and started my journey to lower my cholesterol level in order to obtain medical insurance
weight — 171 lbs
pants size 16 and shirts XL

“The whole purpose of the cholesterol test was to get medical insurance in Wisconsin. With a cholesterol level as high as mine, I was denied insurance and told if I got my cholesterol level below 260 they would review my application. I researched on the internet to find ways to naturally lower cholesterol. Research told me what I already knew: cholesterol can be lowered through diet, weight loss and exercise. The other surprise I learned was that apple cider vinegar can help lower cholesterol.” {for more info on ACV click here}

my mom & my son during a visit to my parents’ house — August 2012

So what did she do??? She took action! She regained control of her life and never looked back.

“ I installed the Lose It! app on my phone, tracked everything I ate, and walked every morning. After my walk I drank an 8 ounce glass of water with 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. I got used to the taste and just kept reminding myself what I wanted to achieve.”

September 2012
20th — “cholesterol test retaken (fasted 12 hours before test) — results revealed cholesterol of 200! — weight was 159 pounds, hadn’t even visited clothes sizes yet although I was digging in my closet for smaller jeans”
21st — “submitted cholesterol test results to insurance company and after pleading my case, I was given insurance with a premium lower than I was paying previously”
17th — reached goal weight of 145 pounds! sizes: jeans — size 12; shirts — L
2013
January 11th — “My current weight is 136 pounds! I also finally went shopping for clothes that fit: jeans — size 8 (with breathing room); shirts — S or M (depending on style).”
She has gone from 171 lbs approximately 6 months ago to a current 134 lbs and dropping!
She is becoming healthier, stronger and more fit each day!!!
What did you give up?
Fast food — I don’t even miss it
Eggs — I switched to egg substitute for the most part (still have one egg once every week or two)
Candy — I still have cravings for chocolate every now and then, but instead of a large candy bar I’m satisified with a Hershey’s kiss
I also limited any food high in cholesterol — ice cream, milk, cheese, red meat, chicken, etc. (the key is portion control).
Hey mom, what’s in the kitchen that wasn’t there in August?
“My new favorite kitchen tool is a scale. When I have doubts, I weigh the portion and that’s what I eat.”
kale (kale chips are awesome), low-fat milk (makes great lattes), fresh vegetables and fruit, egg substitute, baked chips (gotta satisfy that salt craving), high fiber cereal and pasta, coconut oil (still learning how to incorporate it into cooking).
“I make recipe substitutions wherever possible. I’d rather make a lower fat change in a recipe than not have something!”
Now what…
I just received a text message that my mom mailed a registration form for a 5K! My 60 year old mother has made a complete lifestyle change and is loving every minute of it. My dad even offered to make a poster to cheer her on at the race. Go Mom!
***If she can do it, so can you! It’s never too late!***
